The ESPYS is an annual awards show hosted by ESPN that recognizes athletic achievements. During the 1993 ESPYS, legendary basketball coach and ESPN reporter Jim Valvano made an iconic speech in which he announced the formation of the V Foundation for Cancer Research in partnership with ESPN. The ESPYS are an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the V Foundation. The 2024 ESPYS marked the 10 year anniversary of ESPN reporter Stuart Scott's acceptance of the Jimmy V Award for Perserverance, an ESPYS award given out in memory of Jim Valvano. It was an ideal time for the V Foundation to promote the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, which grants research focused on racial disparities in cancer outcomes as well as general cancer research led by scientists from underrepresented groups.
